Konstanz’ privileged location at the intersection of the three countries of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland makes it possible for the University to provide unique conditions for scholarship that transcends national borders. The Swiss canton Thurgau maintains many projects with the University of Konstanz. Further partnerships exist with the Universities of Zurich and St. Gall and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. Among these successful German-Swiss projects are the Biotechnologie-Institut (Biotechnology Institute) in the town of Tägerwilen and the Thurgauer Wirtschaftsinstitut (TWI) (Thurgau Economic Institute) with its chair "The Monetary Economics of Open National Economies" sponsored by the Thurgau Cantonal Bank. The Pädagogische Hochschule Thurgau (Pedagogical College of Canton Thurgau) in Kreuzlingen is one of the University of Konstanz’s partners in the field of teacher education.
The endowed professorial chair for "Alternative Methods to Animal Testing" is a source of innovative thought and research. Together with the Thurgau Foundation for Science and Research, the University of Konstanz has succeeded in establishing this endowed chair. It is conceived of as the core of a new "Center for Health and Consumer Protection". At this center, Konstanz’ scientists will cooperate with internationally leading institutions in Italy, England, and Switzerland in developing alternatives to animal testing methods.
